Stem cells stored in broken freezer given OK for use in N.L. cancer patients – Winnipeg Free Press
THE CANADIAN PRESS
ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest health board says stem cells stored in a freezer that broke down last year can still be safely used for transplants in cancer patients.
Last September, a freezer storing the stem cells of 29 cancer patients set at -150 C had begun to rise in temperature. The cells were transferred to two other freezers – one set at -150 C, the other at -85 C.
Hematologist Dr. Kirsty Tompkins of the Eastern Health authority said today that a sample of the transferred cells was sent to the University of Alberta to determine whether the cells were damaged in the transferral process.
Tompkins says the retesting has led Eastern Health to conclude that the cells are still safe to use for transplants.
She says the patients have been notified of the results of the retests.
Six of the 29 cancer patients have since died, but their deaths are not related to the malfunctioning stem cell freezer.

FIGHT OR FLIGHT, we are programmed for survival

Fight or Flight, We are programmed for survival
We
are born with a fight or flight instinct. It is the strongest instinct in our arsenal (except in the spring when perpetuation of the species can over ride). Wanting to cure disease and live longer is a natural extension of that instinct and it is hard wired into us and is not only completely natural, but unavoidable.
With pluripotent stem cells being induced from skin and testes and adult stem cells treating over 100+ diseases around the world successfully and adult stem cells being found in places all over the body – breast milk, fat, menstruation, bone marrow, blood, noses and of course, teeth; the history of medicine and the advancements for healing have taken an undeniable quantum leap forward.

Italian researchers believe they have found the remains of a female “vampire” in Venice, buried with a brick jammed between her jaws to prevent her feeding on victims of a plague which swept the city in the 16th century.
An undated handout photo from the University of Florence shows the remains of a female “vampire” from 16th-century Venice
The remains of a female “vampire” from 16th-century Venice, buried with a brick in her mouth to prevent her feasting on plague victims.
Matteo Borrini, an anthropologist from the University of Florence, said the discovery on the small island of Lazzaretto Nuovo in the Venice lagoon supported the medieval belief that vampires were behind the spread of plagues like the Black Death.

Injections of licorice ingredient show promise as treatment for cocaine addiction

Snorting Licorice?
An ingredient in licorice shows promise as an antidote for the toxic effects of cocaine abuse, including deadly overdoses of the highly addictive drug, researchers in Korea and Pennsylvania are reporting. Their study is in the 2 January issue of ACS’ Journal of Proteome Research, a monthly publication.
In the new study, Meeyul Hwang, Chae Ha Yang, and colleagues note that there is currently no effective medicine for treating cocaine abuse or addiction. Recent animal studies conducted by the researchers show that a licorice ingredient called isoliquiritigenin (ISL) can block the nervous system’s production of dopamine. That neurotransmitter is involved in emotion, movement, and other brain activities.
Cocaine and other addictive drugs stimulate dopamine and help produce the pleasurable and addictive effects. Drugs that block dopamine block this response. The scientists used rats as model animals to show that rats injected with ISL just prior to cocaine-administration showed 50 percent less of the behavioural effects associated with the illicit drug. They also showed that ISL injections protected nerve cells in the brain from cocaine-associated damage.

Redwood City, California – A rare event is upon us, touted by math fanatics as Square Root Day.
The holiday, which only occurs nine times each century, (9 times Mrs Bueller! -dg) falls on Tuesday this time – 03/03/09 (for the mathematically challenged, three is the square root of nine).
“We have but nine of these days in a century, and hope all can enjoy a little math fun on Tuesday,” said Ron Gordon, a Redwood City teacher who started a contest meant to get people excited about the event.
The winner gets, of course, $339 for having the biggest Square Root Day event.
Gordon’s daughter even set up a Facebook page – one of a half-dozen or so dedicated to the holiday – and hundreds of people had signed up with plans to celebrate in some way. Celebrations are as varied: Some cut root vegetables into squares, others make food in the shape of a square root symbol.
The last such day was five years ago, February 2, 2004, which coincided with Groundhog Day. The next is seven years away, on April 4, 2016.
Gordon knows most people won’t notice the odd calendar event, but hopes those that do get a chuckle out of it.
“These days are like calendar comets, you wait and wait and wait for them, then they brighten up your day – and poof – they’re gone,” he said. – Sapa-AP
