3 times I have fielded understandable questions from very wise people who want to know why Dr Oz did not go into detail about adult stem cells and iPS cells.  Here is my answer to them.

“you have to understand that you know more about stem cells than 99% of the people in the US.  to them , stem cells = embryos = babies.  as far as they know, there are no other stem cells.

walk down the street and ask someone what an adult stem cell is.  ask them what an iPS cell is.  you will only get blank stares.

what Oz did was truly amazing.  shunning history, media, obama’ s funding, the FDA and the AMA…not to mention the fruitless decade long pursuit of embryonic cures undertaken by the always cute michael j fox with the shadow of chris reeves hovering over him…

Oz slammed the door on embryonics.

one step at a time we will educate the masses and introduce them to the fact that adult stem cells have been treating diseases around the world successfully for a decade.  one step at a time…and this was a huge first step!

So from where I am sitting, I want to express a huge amount of appreciation for what he did.  Thank you Dr Oz!

President Obama Also Kills Bush Executive Order for Adult Stem Cell Research

Washington, DC ( — President Barack Obama did more on Monday than just force taxpayers to fund embryonic stem cell research that requires the destruction of human life.

He also rescinded an executive order President Bush put into place funding adult stem cells and new research with iPS cells.

Obama also rescinded Executive Order 13435 of June 20, 2007.

President Bush put that order in place in June 2007 when he vetoed a Congressional measure that would have required embryonic stem cell research funding.

Instead of signing the bill, President Bush issued an executive order to press for more research into ways of obtaining embryonic stem cells without harming human life. The order was intended to ultimately fund research into alternatives” to destructive embryonic stem cell research such as altered nuclear transfer (ANT), “regression” (reverting differentiated cells into stem cells), and other methods.

Bush could be said to have been ahead of his time since regression, also known as direct reprogramming, has taken off and the new induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are the talk of the scientific world.

“Of course, the Administration didn’t have the candor or courage to publicize this part of his nasty work,” he said. “But the now dead order explicitly required funding for alternative methods such as the new IPSCs, which offer so much promise without the ethical contentiousness.”

Cancer threat removed from stem cells, scientists say – Los Angeles Times

ipsc-neural-stem-cellsiPS (induced pluripotent) cells are adult stem cells (in this case skin cells) that have been modified to have the characteristic of pluripotency (the ability to become any of the 220 different cells in the human body).  iPS cells are becoming more and more refined and the major argument against adult stem cells (that they are not pluripotent), is now moot. – dg

Skin cells are reprogrammed into iPS cells and purged of cancer-causing viruses and genes need to create them, researchers report. An iPS cell is key to regenerative medicine.

Borrowing a biological cut-and-paste trick from bacteria, scientists have created the first personalized stem cells for patients that are free of the cancer-causing viruses and genes needed to make them, according to a study published today in the journal Cell.

The stem cells, derived from skin samples provided by five patients with Parkinson’s disease, were first transformed back to the undecided state of cells in an early embryo. Then they were used to make the dopamine-manufacturing neurons that are lost to disease.

The technique removes a key barrier to using a special class of stem cells called an induced pluripotent stem cell, or iPS cell, to create replacement parts for patients that could be transplanted without any risk of rejection — the ultimate goal of regenerative medicine.

“This is a major advance in the field,” said Dr. Marius Wernig, an assistant professor at the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, who wasn’t involved with the study.

The reprogramming of skin cells into iPS cells, which have the potential to become any type of cell in the body, is one of the hottest areas of biological research. The cells seem to offer all the benefits of embryonic stem cells without any of the ethical drawbacks. They are also ideally suited to making genetically matched tissues for patients, such as insulin-secreting islet cells for people with diabetes or brain tissue to treat stroke victims.

Stem Cells Created for Parkinson’s Disease With Low Cancer Risk

March 5 (Bloomberg) — Skin cells from five Parkinson’s disease patients were converted into stem cells that could be used to find treatments for the disabling illness, using a new process that minimizes a risk of cancer, scientists reported.

The method used chemical scissors to trim out genetic material from a virus used as a tool to shuttle genes into the skin cells to reprogram them as stem cells, said researchers at Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. The virus has been linked to an increase in cancer risk.

The new stem cells were then converted into specialized neurons, brain cells that make the chemical dopamine, that are depleted by Parkinson’s. Such cells may be used to study the disease and screen for new drugs, and could one day lead to the creation of cellular therapies for the disease that robs people of the ability to control movement and balance.

“The beauty of the system is that for the first time we have the ability to really generate cells affected by (Parkinson’s) disease,” said Frank Soldner, a postdoctoral researcher at the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Whitehead, and co-author of a study in tomorrow’s issue of the journal Cell.

The new method improves on a technique discovered in 2006 that turns skin into stem cells, an advance that enabled scientists to avoid the ethical dilemma of obtaining the cells from human embryos. The Whitehead team used an enzyme called Cre-recombinase that acts like chemical scissors to cut out the virus and genes once the transformation was done.

CATCH UP! – UK’s Stem Cell Sciences acquired by US company

shhWith the ever so quiet announcement that the NIH is getting into adult stem cell research, the bugle has been (oh so quietly) blown for the United States.  It is no longer a question of whether the US is 5-10 years behind in adult stem cell research, it is only a question of what can be done?

StemCells, Inc is one of the first to see this and their purchase of the UK stem cell company may allow them to pursue stem cell R&D outside the US is an effort to keep pace with the rest of the world and try to CATCH UP! – dg

US company StemCells Inc is to expand its capabilities in the field with the purchase of UK based Stem Cell Sciences for $4.8 million.

Established in 1994, Stem Cell Sciences is based in Cambridge in the UK and specialises in developing stem cells to be used in drug discovery and regenerative medicine research.

The company has a second research base in Monash near Melbourne, Australia, and this will also be included in the sale to the US group.

California-based StemCells Inc is developing stem cell products for therapeutic use in humans. It says its combination with Stem Cell Sciences will provide a major boost to its commercial base.

“The industrial logic of this acquisition is compelling,” said Martin McGlynn, president and chief executive of StemCells. “StemCells has established itself as a world leader in tissue-derived stem and progenitor cells for therapeutic uses, while Stem Cell Sciences has focused on non-therapeutic applications for embryonic and tissue derived stem cells, such as cell-based assays for drug discovery and screening.”

McGlynn said the combination of three distinct stem cell platforms, adult, embryonic and iPS cells, for both therapeutic and drug discovery applications would allow the company to diversify and pursue near-term opportunities while continuing to develop its therapeutic products.

When does an adult stem cell look like an embryonic stem cell and act like an embryonic stem cell but isn’t an adult stem cell?

When it’s an Induced pluripotent stem cell.

Induced pluripotent stem cells[1], commonly abbreviated as iPS cells or iPSCs, are a type of pluripotent stem cell artificially derived from a non-pluripotent cell, typically an adult somatic cell, by inducing a “forced” expression of certain genes.

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells are believed to be identical to natural pluripotent stem cells, such as embryonic stem cells in many respects, such as the expression of certain stem cell genes and proteins, chromatin methylation patterns, doubling time, embryoid body formation, teratoma formation, viable chimera formation, and potency and differentiability, but the full extent of their relation to natural pluripotent stem cells is still being assessed.

IPSCs were first produced in 2006 from mouse cells and in 2007 from human cells. This has been cited as an important advancement in stem cell research, as it may allow researchers to obtain pluripotent stem cells, which are important in research and potentially have therapeutic uses, without the controversial use of embryos.
